Activities associated with Homologous Movement Patterns

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THESE ACTIVITIES
Homologous movements are those where the upper body works in unison to engage with the lower body. An exemplar is a Caterpillar. Infants usually begin moving by utilizing this form of propulsion, which we describe as scooting. Dimensionally this is described as movements in the TRANSVERSE PLANE. Activities that encourage the expression of these foundational movement patterns are discussed here:

Wiggling through a tight space (tunnel).
Swimming: Breast Stroke, Butterfly,

ROSENBERG BASIC EXERCISE

SITTING ON SIT BONES / SITTING CULTURE

YOGA POSES
5 Tibetan Rites (BIG TOE CONTACT/HEEL OF HAND)
These Yoga Poses enhance Homologous integration and are renown for their effects on health and longevity:
5 TIBETAN RITES

STANDING LIKE A TREE

Standing wall press and stair exercises Homologous
HEEL OF HAND
Stance in foot section

UNDULATING EXPANSION/CONTRACTION
Undulation exercises are done laying on one’s belly. Undulation is best approached as an extremely mild Isotonic exercise, where the level of muscle activation is just adequate to remove the slack from the muscle fibers, held for a few seconds, and then the opposite pattern is engaged. Undulation is discussed in this paper:
UNDULATION
The undulation pattern associated with Homologous Movements is the expansion/contraction of the core. Breathing exemplifies this pattern. It may help to visualize this movement a ball expanding and contracting (Expansion is Sympathetic Nervous System activation/contracting is Parasympathetic Nervous System activation).
